Insect control in Wool, Hay and Paper when used for Insulation in buildings

Borax is a specially formulated Boron based compound dissolved in only in water. It contains no solvents or additives of any kind. This product is designed to penetrate into the wool and hay where the insects live and breed and into wood, where woodworm live and breed. There are many unpleasant chemical insect and woodworm treatment products on the market today, but be careful because many based on hazardous chemicals that evaporate into your rooms - into the air that you breathe. The active Borate in Borax does not evaporate, so remains where you want it - inside the wool, hay or wood. Borax will not lose its effectiveness, even if vacuuming occurs.

Female insects lay their eggs on insulation and bare timber surfaces. These eggs hatch into a small worm like larvae. Insect larvae then feed on the wool, hay or wood treated with Boron based Borax. They never reach the adult stage. Borax is designed to inhibit insect larvae that eat into the wool, hay or wood, preventing infestation and future damage.

As long as label safety directions are followed, there should be no harmful effects to the people or pets in the house.

Borax is specially formulated to dry dust-free and there is no clean up needed after treatment. It is a true solution in water: no added chemicals, solvents or dyes.

Application for insect Control

Wool based Carpets or Fabrics:: Apply Borax to freshly cleaned or vacuumed carpets or fabrics only, otherwise the dust and debris in the material may reduce the penetration of the Borax solution. Apply using either a carpet cleaning machine, a hand spray pump, by brush or by dipping. Vacuum off the excess fluid using a wet vac or a carpet cleaning machine, or, for fabrics, allow to dry naturally or spin out mechanically. Collect all run-off and re-use. Keep unprotected people, pets and children out of the treatment area for at least 1 hour, or until dry, whichever is the longer.

Timber: Apply Borax with a spray applicator, by dipping or by brush. Allow to dry fully before handling. Any damp timbers (over 18% Timber Scale) should have an additional treatment with Boron Ultra Gel, by brush. Damp or wet timbers bearing onto or inside a wall also require injection with Boron Ultra 78 Paste. Add Boron Rods to such timbers if likely to remain permanently or seasonally wet - for example, in very thick stone walls.

Guarantee

Property Repair Systems guarantees the product for 20 years, provided that the treated materials are not subject to water leaks or flooding.

Borax will NOT kill some types of adult insects, which, due to their life cycles, may emerge after treatment - this is called the 'fly out period' and for Common Furniture Beetle, for example, is 3 to 5 years. It will prevent re-infestation, so that the attack will die out - this process is the same for most surface treatments and is referred to as 'breaking the egg laying cycle'.

Borax - Wool based Carpets and Fabrics, Hay Insulation and Wood Treatment

A unique odourless treatment, already to dissolved in water, designed to treat Wool based products, Hay and Timber by dipping, brush or spray. It avoids the hazard problems of many liquid preservatives by using only water as a carrier. It can also be used in most situations to replace other less ‘friendly’ contact type insecticides, including Permethrin (which for example, like all Pyrethroids, is highly toxic to fish and birds, and gives off a vapour into the air you breathe).

Ready to Use - 5 litres or 25 litres of Borax - already dissolved in water at 5% w/w..

INSECTICIDE AND BIOCIDE SAFETY

Use Wood Preservatives and Biocides safely. Always read the label and product information Data Sheet before use.

Wear the correct safety equipment and keep unprotected people and animals out of the treated area for the statutory period given on the label, or until surfaces are dry, which ever is the longer.

All products have some hazards and the COSHH Regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) apply to ALL building repair and construction products that we sell, even Cement.

If in doubt consult us for free technical help. Take care not to contaminate soil, waterways or the environment with the product or the waste and packaging. These can be returned to us for disposal.

Avoid using any type of chemical in your home if any of the following are likely to come into contact with the spray or treated surfaces: animals, fish, birds, babies, young children, asthmatics, pregnant women or those vulnerable due to ill health.

On-going European reclassification of Pesticides has resulted in our Borax product having to carry a warning label (for the first time since 1890) on all products used at over 5.5% BAE concentration. This label is a warning that if you eat the product and then became pregnant you might give birth to a slightly underweight baby, or suffer a slight reduction in the size of your testes. The tests, on rats, required them to eat the human equivalent of 18 level teaspoons full of Borate (DOT) per day for 2 years. We believe that you are unlikely to do this and the lack of any other negative evidence, despite the severe European Review process, suggests that this product is very safe indeed.

Woodworm treatment products do not need to even reach the 5% concentration level to be effective, so are not subject to any additional labelling, because of their unblemished safety record.

See our Technical section for more information.
